Rankin County is 1 of only a few counties in Mississippi certified by the National Weather service as a StormReady community.
StormReady communities are better
prepared to save lives from the onslaught of severe weather through better planning, education, and awareness.
No community is storm proof, but StormReady communities
can help save lives through proper planning and education. Rankin County’s StormReady status was recently recertified through 2010.

Training & Exercises
Rankin County has a variety of plans in place that specify how to respond to various disasters and emergencies. Testing those plans on a regular basis is essential to ensuring that
First Responders throughout the county are prepared to respond to and recover from emergencies. By exercising the county’s emergency plans, local officials can identify areas that work
well and those that need improvement. Lessons learned from exercises are used to revise operational plans and provide a basis for training to improve proficiency in executing response
efforts. The county’s latest exercise was conducted in February, and was designed to exercise the county’s Ross Barnett Reservoir Incident Management Plan.

Emergency Responder Day
Each year, Rankin County Emergency Operations hosts an annual Emergency Responder Day. Local vendors are brought in to demonstrate to responders the latest and most advanced equipment
in emergency response. Emergency Responder day provides both hands-on training and classroom activities in areas such as extrication, hazardous materials, emergency medical response,
air care, fire suppression, and other specialized fields. The 2007 Responder day was held April 21st, and included over 100 participants. Emergency Responder Day training is offered
free to all local responders and is sponsored by the Rankin County Emergency Operations and the Rankin County Board of Supervisors.
