Public Emergency Warning Methods
Outdoor Warning Sirens

Rankin County’s outdoor warning system consists of 29 sirens strategically placed throughout the county. The sirens are used to warn citizens of potential danger such as tornado WARNINGS issued for the county, sightings of a tornado or funnel cloud by an organized Weather Team Member or Public Safety Official (TRAINED Weather Spotter), or an important safety announcement (example: evacuation notice, shelter in-place notice, etc.) While the outdoor warning system is an effective method for notifying citizens outdoors, it should not be relied upon to provide sufficient warning indoors or in noisy areas. Air-conditioning units, thunder, wind, rain, and other conditions can cause sirens not to be heard indoors (even if siren can be heard indoors during tests).

The Warning Sirens in Rankin County are tested the first day of each month at noon unless pending weather conditions are not favorable for the test. If you hear the outdoor warning system at anytime other than scheduled test days, seek shelter and tune in to a local radio, television, or NOAA weather radio station for more instructions and information.

Rankin County strongly encourages individuals, families, and businesses to use NOAA Weather Radios to receive warnings and emergency information. NOAA weather radio is a nationwide network of radio stations broadcasting continuous weather information directly from nearby National Weather Service Offices. NOAA weather radios broadcasts National Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24 hours a day.
